Marjorie Sparks Voice Studio :: Individual InstructionIndividual Instruction

Marjorie Sparks' teaching style and methods are well grounded in her own vocal technique studies. From years of study, she has developed an integrated and creative approach to both a teaching style, and vocal technique, which enables the singer to acquire good practical technique and a solid understanding of themselves. With these two aspects well in hand she brings about a well put together vocal instrument and a confident person ready to express the music.

Her technique methods develop the following:
  • Secure understanding of breath control and how to use the Italian apoggio breathing system.
  • Vowel placement that is well connected to listening and the breath.
  • Posture and body alignment stemming from the Alexander technique and other body awareness methods.
  • Careful ongoing attention to the release of jaw, tongue ,and neck muscles for a free non- throaty sound.
  • A concentration on speaking musical text and connecting it to the singing voice.
  • Developing carefully the resonant vocal chambers for a clear ringing timbre ,primarily the open space of the throat and the soft palate/ nasopharynx area.
  • Blending the head and chest register to bring out the chiaroscuro aspect of the singer's voice.
Her teaching style:
  • The singer is accepted at their own particular level of ability and talent.
  • The singer is expected to take their studies and music seriously and spend time practising and analysing their development.
  • A personal and objective teaching balance is maintained in the lesson. This provides an area of trust so that the student feels safe and confident but at the same time is able to handle the rigorous technical demands asked of them to improve.
  • There is no attempt made to compare one singer with another . All singers at all levels are regarded with respect and appreciation for their efforts.
  • The opinions and ideas brought to the lessons by the student are very valuable and appreciated.
  • The students are constantly encouraged to set realistic goals and achieve them.
